PEN SA Gravely Concerned About Raid on Home of Jacques Pauw

The Board of PEN SA is gravely concerned at reports of a raid by the Hawks yesterday afternoon on the home of journalist Jacques Pauw, author of The President’s Keepers. The Hawks obtained a search and seizure warrant from the Malmesbury Magistrates Court and undertook the raid, which “relates to supposed secret documents in [Pauw’s] possession”.

We note reports that the South African National Editor’s Forum (Sanef) plans to meet with Police Minister Bheki Cele to discuss the Hawks’ action. We agree with the opinion of Sam Mkokeli, chairperson of Sanef’s media freedom sub-committee, that this is “not only an attempt to intimidate Pauw but also other journalists”.

PEN SA will be monitoring the situation.
