LITERARY FESTIVALS

Poetry in McGregor Festival

About: Poetry in McGregor is an annual event that honours poets and celebrates poetry in a tiny little town on the edge of the Karoo.

Jozi Book Fair
When: Thursday, 29 August – Sunday, 1 September
Where: Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown
About: The festival is free to all members of the public and many of the events are hosted by the public. The Festival Exhibitors – publishers and non-governmental organisations – showcase their work and sell books affordably. The Festival promotes reading and writing in all South Africa’s languages and especially indigenous languages and mother tongues; promotes access and exposure to all the arts.

Lecture – Zulu Bird Names and Bird Lore: the world of birds, the Zulu language and the cultural beliefs of the Zulu people by Adrian Koopman, Emeritus Professor of Zulu Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal
When: Thursday, 1 August at 5:45 PM
Where:  John Bews Lecture Theatre, Life Sciences Campus, Pietermaritzburg.
About: UKZN Press invites you to a lecture, jointly hosted by the Royal Society of South Africa. Prof. Koopman’s lecture will explain different aspects of the system involved in bestowing Zulu avian nomenclature; how ‘Names and Identity’ differ in western Linnaean-based taxonomy of birds (family, genus, species, for example) compared to the non-Linnaean ‘folk taxonomy’ of the Zulu.

Decolonizing Science? Rodent Research in Tanzania, 1970-present: presented by Jia Hui Lee

About: The paper will track changes to the Centre’s research program on rodents as pest and disease carriers, the division of labor between Europeans and Tanzanians, and emerging questions about ownership and leadership of scientific knowledge and materials, such as rodent specimens, during the period beginning in the 1970s until the present day.
