Below you’ll find a list of events featuring PEN South Africa members, as well as a selection of other noteworthy literary events happening around South Africa. If there is an event you’d like us to feature let us know.

  • Launch of The Secret Ambition by Valerio Magrelli
    Where: David Krut Projects, Cape Town
    When: Tuesday 1 September 2015, 6 PM
    The poems in The Secret Ambition were selected and translated by PEN SA member Douglas Reid Skinner along with Marco Fazzini.

  • Pan-African Literacy for All and Reading Association of South Africa National Literacy Conference
    Where: Baxter Theatre, Rondebosch, Cape Town
    When: Wednesday 2 September to Saturday 5 September 2015
    The theme of the three day conference is Imagination and Literacy: Theory and Practice.

  • National Book Week
    Where: South Africa
    When: Monday 7 September to Sunday 13 September 2015
    The South African Book Development Council (SABDC), in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, is hosting the sixth annual National Book Week (NBW). This will include a touring bus and the 67 Minutes for 67 Books campaign.

  • UJ Reads: Meet Niq Mhlongo
    Where: The UJ campus libraries, Johannesburg
    When: 12:15 PM – 1:30 PM on Tuesday 8 September to Friday 11 September 2015
    PEN SA member Niq Mhlongo will be visiting the libraries across all four UJ campuses to give talks and meet students.

  • Open Book Festival
    Where: Various venues, Cape Town
    When: Wednesday 9 September to Sunday 13 September 2015
    There are thirty-eight PEN SA members speaking at the festival and two PEN Dialogues being held. PEN SA is bringing Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov to the festival, as well as our Executive Vice-President Mandla Langa.

  • Polokwane Literary Fair

  • Jozi Book Fair
    Where: Wits University, Science Stadium, West Campus

    PEN SA members Keorapetse Kgositsile, Zakes Mda, Zukiswa Wanner, Hamilton Wende and Raymond Suttner will be speaking at the Fair.

  • “Of Nature and Imagination” – Literary Crossroads
    Where: Goethe-Institut, Parkwoods, Johannesburg
    When: Tuesday 15 September 2015, 7 PM
    PEN SA member Henrietta Rose-Innes and and Angela Makholwa will be talking around the theme “Of Nature and Imagination”.

  • Launch of The Man with the Suitcase by CJ “Jonty” Driver
    Where: Clarke’s Bookshop, 199 Long Street, Cape Town
    When: Wednesday 16 September 2015, 5:30 – 6 PM
    PEN SA member CJ “Jonty” Driver will be launching his book The Man with the Suitcase at Clarke’s Bookshop.

  • Launch of Stray edited by Helen Moffett and Diane Awerbuck

  • ParkWords 2015, Parkview Literary Festival
    Where: Tyrone Avenue, Parkview
    When: Thursday 24 September 2015, 9:30 AM to 9 PM
    PEN SA Executive Vice-President Mandla Langa and PEN SA members Jenny Crwys-Williams, Arthur Goldstuck, Ben Williams, Achmat Dangor and Michele Magwood will be speaking at this free event on Heritage Day.

  • International African Book Fair – SILA
    Where: Tenerife, Canary Islands
    When: Thursday 24 September to Sunday 27 September 2015
    Meetings, discussions, and sharing – once again, a diverse and dense programme for this new edition of the SILA, organised by Baile del Sol publishers. Not to be missed: a discussion on the pan African literature collection Terres solidaires, and a presentation of Octavio Kulesz’s study on digital publishing in developing countries, commissioned by the Alliance.

  • Moses Tladi UNEARTHED exhibition
    Where: South African National Gallery, Cape Town
    When: Opens 24 September
    This exhibition of Moses Tladi’s work is based on PEN SA member Angela Read Lloyd’s 2009 book, The Artist in the Garden, The Quest for Moses Tladi. Read more about the book as well as Angela’s piece on what this exhibition means to both her and the artist’s family here.
  • Cape Town Fringe Festival 2015

    The Cape Town Fringe Festival features dance and physical theatre, illusion, music, performance art and theatre.

  • FOCAL Poetry Circle
    Where: Central Library, Cape Town
    When: Saturday 26 September 2015, 2:15 PM to 3:45 PM
    FOCAL are pleased to announce that guest poet at the Poetry Circle will be the fabulous performance poet cum English Teacher Cosmas Mairosi. His father was a wood carver and Cosmas sees himself as a word-carver, caring poems about issues that directly affect peoples lives while also being entertaining. After the guest poet there will be an open mic session followed by light refreshments. All are welcome. No charge.
  • Nal’ibali’s Story Bosso Closing Event
