Leon de Kock and Karin Schimke win Sol Plaatje Translation Award

Congratulations to PEN SA members Leon de Kock and Karin Schimke for winning the 2019 Sol Plaatje Translation Award for Flame in the Snow, their English translation of Vlam in die Sneeu.
Flame in the Snow is a collection of love letters exchanged in the 1960s between novelist André Brink and poet Ingrid Jonker. It was first published by Umuzi in 2015.
The Sol Plaatje Prize for Translation is a bi-annual prize, which was first awarded in 2007. It is an acknowledgement for the translation of prose or poetry into English from any of the other South African official languages and administered by the English Academy of South Africa.
Past winners include Daniel Kunene for his translation of My Child! My Child! by C. L. S. Nyembezi, Jeff Opland for Abantu Besizwe: Historical And Biographical Writings (by S.E.K. Mqhayi) and Michiel Heyns for Agaat (by Marlene van Niekerk).
