Congratulations to PEN SA member ZP Dala, whose novel What About Meera has won the Debut prize in the inaugural Minara Aziz Hassim Literary Awards for writers from KwaZulu-Natal. Carol Campbell won the Main Category prize for her novel Esther’s House.

In 2014 the Minara Chamber of Commerce created the Awards, bestowing Durban-born writer Aziz Hassim with a posthumous Arts and Culture Literary Award as part of their Recognition Awards.

ZP has informed her publisher, Umuzi, that her prize money will be donated to a school in her home town, Tongaat, where much of her novel is set. There was a fire at the school earlier this year and she will be using her money to help re-stock the library.
