University of Witwatersrand Ruth First Fellowship 2017 Open for Applications
23 Mar 2017
Deadline: 31 March 2017
Fellowship: Fellows will receive a monthly stipend and research costs
The fellowship is intended to allow Fellows to pursue an in-depth project of original research. It should be groundbreaking and in keeping with the tradition of Ruth First’s politically and socially relevant research and journalism. In addition to financial support, the Fellowship program will provide mentorship and feedback aimed at developing the Fellows’ understanding of their research, and deepening their skills in communicating their research to audiences. We welcome applications from writers, journalists, film-makers, photographers, and researchers.
For 2017, our theme is “Directions for a new South African journalism”. This year, in South Africa and globally we see the growth of “fake news” and “paid news”, we read debates as to whether the ‘fourth estate’ has been captured as part of an elite, we hear social media being accused of fostering hate speech and scaring women and others away from public spaces for debate. But we also see innovations and new alternative sources emerging. We welcome applications focused on researching and critiquing the current state of journalism but we also welcome practical research directed at shaping a new journalism capable of meeting new challenges.
