04 May 2017

Last month former Books LIVE Editor Jennifer Malec and Books LIVE founder and PEN SA member Ben Williams launched a new books website called The Reading List. This month we are excited to announce that the two of them have just launched The Johannesburg Review of Books, with Williams as the Publisher and Malec as the Editor.
The JRB‘s Editorial staff features some impressive names, including PEN SA members Henrietta Rose-Innes, Efemia Chela, Victor Dlamini, Rustum Kozain and Niq Mhlongo.
PEN SA President Margie Orford is part of the Editorial Advisory Panel, along with PEN SA members Lauren Beukes, Richard de Nooy, Petina Gappah, Nozizwe Cynthia Jele, Yewande Omotoso, Bontle Senne and Elinor Sisulu.
The JRB will come out monthly and will feature “reviews, essays, poetry, photographs and short fiction from South Africa, Africa and beyond”.
Highlights from the first issue include “New Poetry” by Kozain, “Sailing with The Argonauts: A personal history of Christmas, queerness and Maggie Nelson” by Chela and Bongani Madondo’s review of 2016 PEN South Africa Student Writing Prize-winner Koleka Putuma’s Collective Amnesia.
