Raymond Suttner to Graduate at UCT 49 Years After Submission of “Banned” Thesis

A hearty congratulations to PEN SA member Raymond Suttner, who will graduate with a LLM law degree at the University of Cape Town, almost half a century after the original submission of his thesis, which was rejected at the time for quoting a then-banned person.

Suttner will graduate from UCT on 14 December 2018. He first submitted his thesis to the university in 1969, but could not be recognised at the time because he quoted a banned academic and anti-apartheid activist, Professor Jack Simons. The thesis was on African customary law. Since then he’s gone on to earn other degrees, including a PhD from Wits and an honorary Doctor of Letters from the Netaji Subhas Open University in Kolkata.

More information and a radio interview with Suttner may be found at CapeTalk’s website.
