PEN America Grants for 2018/2019 Now Open for Applications

Our colleagues at PEN America (United States) have recently created a list of literary grants & fellowships for which they are currently accepting applications.

This cycle PEN America is offering grants for translated international literature, English translation of Italian literature, and literary oral history, and fellowships for emerging writers, children’s/YA fiction, and writing for justice.

The grants and fellowships offered through PEN America that are eligible for writers from southern or South Africa are:

  • PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship for Children’s/YA Fiction ($5,000)
The PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship is offered annually to an author of children’s or young-adult fiction whose work is of high literary caliber, and is designed to assist a writer at a crucial moment in their career to complete a book-length work-in-progress.
  • PEN/Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History ($10,000)
The PEN/Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History is offered annually to an author of a literary work of nonfiction that uses oral history to illuminate an event, individual, place, or movement, and is designed to assist a writer at a crucial moment in their work-in-progress.
  • PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant ($2,000-4,000)
The PEN/Heim Translation Fund provides grants to support the translation of book-length works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or drama that have not previously appeared in English in print or have appeared only in an outdated or otherwise flawed translation.
  • PEN Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature ($5,000)
The PEN Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature is awarded to a translator for a work-in-progress of a book-length translation of an Italian work of literary fiction or nonfiction into English.
