Press release from Type/Cast:

Type/Cast: A New Literary Journal, Curated in Cape Town

Type/Cast, a new literary journal curated in Cape Town that has created quite a bit of pre-launch buzz, has officially made its début online. The launch issue, at, is guest edited by the acclaimed South African writer Imraan Coovadia, Type/Cast launches with Coovadia’s selection of five pieces, which will be followed by the editorial collective’s own top five and then the rest of the launch collection. There are stories, poems and essays, by new and established writers alike, who were all selected the same way.

“Type/Cast stands apart from many other literary journals,” says Noélle Koeries, a founding member of the editorial collective. “All our submissions are assessed blind: we have no idea who the author is. When they have been selected, the authors then get to work with an experienced editor, as if their manuscript had been accepted by a major publisher. This helps the writers develop and also delivers more polished final work for our readers.”

Guest editor Imraan Coovadia is best-known for his novels such as The Wedding (2001) and Tales of the Metric System (2014). He is a Professor at the University of Cape Town, where he is the Director of the Creative Writing Centre. He was recently the recipient of the inaugural National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) Book, Creative and Digital Award.

Type/Cast has just announced its next call for submissions, which has been communicated in the next few days through its active social media channels. The journal is looking for fiction, poetry essays and also making a special call for themed photographic submissions that deal with the topic of scent. The deadline is Friday 2 September 2016.
