Press release:

Where are the plays by South African black lesbians? There don’t appear to be any. Junkets author Fatima Dike is keen to form a group of black lesbians whom she will mentor in the art and craft of writing plays. And, goodness knows, South African black lesbians have got some stories to tell! Anyone Cape Town-based who is interested should contact Fatima at fatimad@artscape.co.za

Some facts about Fatima Dike:

  • Fatima herself has written a number of plays over the years, from her early association with the original Space Theatre in 1971. These include The First South African and The Sacrifice of Kreli.
  • And, of course, the Junkets-published The Return.
  • She is a Director of the Siyasanga Cape Town Theatre Company.
  • In 2000 she was awarded the Molteno Gold Medal for Lifetime Service to Theatre by the Cape 300 Foundation.
  • In 2009 she received the Living Legend Award at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
  • In 2014 she was awarded the Naledi Lifetime Achievement Award.
