PEN SA member Tracey Farren’s novel Whiplash has been adapted to film under the title Tess, directed by Meg Rickards. Whiplash was the first novel published by Modjaji Books, PEN SA member Colleen Higgs’s publishing house, in 2008.

Tess won Best South African Feature Film at the 2016 Durban International Film Festival as well as the Best Editing and Best Actress awards.

Tess, which is in Afrikaans with English subtitles, will be showing at Cinema Nouveau at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront from Friday 16 September for a week to qualify it for Oscar consideration in the best foreign film category.

Tickets can be booked here and you can follow the Tess Facebook page for updates on the movie.
