The English Academy of South Africa calls for submissions for the 2018 Olive Schreiner Prize, which this year is being awarded for prose.

The Olive Schreiner Prize for Prose is awarded for original literary work in English including novels, short stories, descriptive sketches, essays or other forms of prose where the ‘creative’ element carries more weight than purely factual or informative content.

The full call for submissions is reproduced below:

  1. The prize is called the English Academy of Southern Africa 2018 Olive Schreiner Prize for Prose.
  2. The Olive Schreiner Prize for Prose is awarded for original literary work in English including novels, short stories, descriptive sketches, essays or other forms of prose where the ‘creative’ element carries more weight than purely factual or informative content.
  3. The English Academy of Southern Africa 2018 Olive Schreiner Prize for Prose is awarded for literary work published in 2015, 2016 or 2017.
  4. The author must be a citizen of a southern African country.
  5. The work must have been published in southern Africa.
  6. The Prize is expressly intended as encouragement for a writer who has produced work of great promise, but cannot yet be regarded as an established novelist or short story writer.
  7. The Prize may not be awarded to the same person more than twice.
  8. The Prize may not be awarded posthumously or retrospectively.
  9. Please send three (3) copies of entries to: The Administrative Officer, English Academy of Southern Africa, P O Box 124, Wits, 2050 on or before Monday 21 September 2018.
