Efemia Chela Shortlisted for 2017 Gerald Kraak Award

Congratulations to PEN SA member Efemia Chela who is among 15 writers and artists from Africa shortlisted for the 2017 Gerald Kraak Award. Chela was shortlisted for her essay on Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts, ‘Sailing with the Argonauts’, which was published in The Johannesburg Review of Books in May 2017.

[The Gerald Kraak Award] was created by Jacana Literary Foundation and The Other Foundation in honour of the late activist Gerald Kraak, and honours African writing and photography that ‘provokes thought on the topics of gender, social justice and sexuality’.

The judging panel for this year’s award include PEN SA Board Member Sisonke Msimang and PEN SA member Mark Gevisser.
