Call for Submissions for the Relaunched New Contrast Literary Journal

Deadline: 19 February 2016

Press release from New Contrast:

The New Contrast Manifesto edition

Manifesto, noun.
“A written statement declaring publically the intentions, motives or views of its issuer.”

The last few years have seen vast social and political changes in South African society. It is the job of literature to respond to these changes, to provoke, to protest and to astonish the reader. With this in mind, the directors and editorial staff of New Contrast recognize that we have a responsibility to maintain a journal that is current, honest and truly reflective of the times we live in.

We are happy to announce a relaunch of New Contrast in April 2016, with an edition that will serve as a manifesto for our new literary mission.

We would like our contributors to be part of this journey. We are therefore calling for innovative and powerful submissions that can serve as examples of work that declare or reflect our new vision. Surprise us, alarm us, motivate us. Your submission can be social, political, philosophical or personal. It must take the form of a short story, poem or artwork. Our usual submission guidelines (found at will apply.

We will for the first time be accepting submissions in IsiXhosa, alongside English and Afrikaans.
